Apethorpe
Apethorpe is located in the north of the District approximately 1¼ miles south-east of King's Cliffe. Apethorpe was recorded in the Domesday Book as Patorp. The village is compact, uniform and centred around Main Street. In the late 15th Century Apethorpe was acquired by Sir Guy Wolston, an officer in the household of Edward IV, who began the construction of the present Apethorpe Hall. The first Earl of Westmorland rebuilt much of Apethorpe Hall, and various 19th Century tablets to the Earls of Westmorland can be found in St Leonard’s Church which dates back to the 14th and 15th Centuries. In 1904 Mr Leonard Brassey made many alterations to the village, a number of cottages were built and the old Westmorland Arms was replaced by a new public house, the King's Head.
